Seppo Toivonen from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency shares his views on the evolving toolbox for large-scale road projects.

YIT’s target is to halve emissions from its own operations and self-developed projects in the next 10 years.

When completed, Jokeri Light Rail will relieve crosstown traffic in the Helsinki metropolitan area and reduce traffic emissions. The extensive construction project is divided into sections. In section 3, Site Engineer Arttu Äikäs, 28, acts as the right-hand man of the Section Manager and orchestrates the project’s schedule and costs.

In the prevailing exceptional situation, construction industry companies must consider which projects have the greatest impact on the society, in other words, which projects should progress regardless of the crisis. At YIT, one of the prioritised projects is the Jokeri Light Rail project. If the completion of Jokeri Light Rail was delayed, all parties would suffer significant financial losses. This project has a wider impact on the development and employment in the Helsinki metropolitan area, since many smaller-scale projects are linked to the establishment of the rail line connection in terms of their schedule.

Last autumn, a group of school children visited Jokeri Light Rail’s bridge construction site in Veräjälaakso. The visit raised a number of questions that many of us may be secretly thinking but dare not ask, such as, “Where do you go to the loo?” and “Do you eat doughnuts on the site?”

The agendas of today’s cities can include a wide range of items, but there are a few themes that cut across all of them. You would be hard-pressed to find a city that is not, for example, trying to reduce its environmental impact, increase its appeal and keep its residents and businesses happy.
