We are building the Hakaniemi bridge as part of the Kruunusillat alliance. The need to renew the bridge serves as a starting point for the development and comfort of the area.
The new Hakaniemi bridge is being built as part of the Kruunusillat alliance. The original Hakaniemi bridge was completed in 1961, and it is already in bad shape. With the need to renew the more than 60-year-old bridge, connections for walking, cycling and public transport will also improve. Preparatory work has already been done in the area since spring 2021. Construction work on the new Hakaniemi bridge started in February 2022.
The new Hakaniemi bridge will be built on the east side of the old bridge. The new bridge connects the north side of Kruununhaa and Sörnäinen beach road like the old one, but it will be lower than the old bridge. A lower structure means the removal of the current, massive ramps - and at the same time space for new construction.
A lower bridge also means a more pleasant environment for cyclists and pedestrians. In addition to public transport, especially cyclists and pedestrians have been taken into account in the design. The area's new cycling arrangements are in line with the target status of the inner city cycling network. For cars, Hakaniemensilla will have two lanes in both directions.
All deck structures were cast during 2023, after which surface structures could be made: waterproofing, asphalting, railings and paving. The finishing works also take about a year, and they will continue even after the bridge is put into use for the cladding structures below. The bridge was put into use in May 2024. Demolition work to dismantle the old Hakaniemi bridge has started and is progressing rapidly. The goal is to start passenger traffic of the new tramway in 2027.
