The maritime heart of Helsinki

The joint goal of the City of Helsinki and the Port of Helsinki is to improve the use of the South Harbour area, strengthen the port's operating conditions and streamline traffic in southern Helsinki. The Port of Helsinki development programme will transfer Tallinn traffic to the West Harbour and Stockholm traffic to Katajanokka. Centering Tallinn traffic requires the construction of a harbour tunnel from the West Harbour to the West Motorway. Stockholm's passenger and car ferry traffic will be transferred to Katajanokka by 2033.

The aim is to create a cultural and leisure centre in the Katajanokka area, and to connect the Katajanokka pier to the pedestrian-oriented city centre. The Katajanokka harbour area will become the maritime heart of Helsinki, a living part of the city's history and a pleasant meeting place.
