We are building a new water supply in the area of the intersection of Aleksis Kiven katu and Teollisuuskatu in Helsinki.

The old water supply network around Teollisuuskatu and Aleksis Kive katu is in need of renovation and is prone to both pipe breaks and overflows. The area's water supply network was built at a time when all waste water and rainwater and meltwater, i.e. stormwater, were led to a common mixed sewer. The challenge of mixed drainage is that during heavy rains, large amounts of rain can exceed the capacity of the pipeline, which can lead to wastewater leaking into the environment.

The contract replaces old mixed sewers with modern, separated wastewater and stormwater sewers, and a new tunnel is built so that stormwater can be directed from the area directly into the waterway instead of a wastewater treatment plant in the future. Excavation work at the site began on August 1, 2023, and the work is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

"As a customer, we have received exactly what we wanted, and within the agreed schedule. YIT's documentation and attention to occupational safety has been at an excellent level. All in all, the cooperation went smoothly and uncomplicated," says Joni Kontiainen from HSY.

Safe working environment - Better mind

The site is logistically challenging due to the cramped work environment. Rock tunnels are dark and varied environments where explosives and heavy equipment are used. Our long experience of working in demanding underground sites ensures that the excavation work is safe and efficient. Through our experience and good cooperation with the authorities, we ensure that the noise, extra traffic and dusting caused by the work at a site located in a central and heavily trafficked location are as minimal as possible. For example, dusting is limited by the dust collectors of the drilling equipment, by watering the piles and loads, and by watering the roads near the construction site.
